made good progress this weekend ... finally, this starts to look like a real cluster, doesn't it? 5 blades are assembled and installed: 4x intel D945GCLF2 (with atom 330, dualcore, 1,6 ghz), 1x netgear GS108 (8-port gigabit ethernet switch). each atom blade has 2 gigs of ram and 2 gigs of flash. no disks.
there is room for maybe 3 more blades in the chassis, which happens to be the same number of ports left on the switch (assuming the last one is kept for uplink).
now there are just two things missing until i can boot the whole cluster for the first time: an on-off-switch and status led for each blade, and a power cable for the switch blade.

putting the rail back in "12v power rail"
i am planning to use 5 aluminium rails to distribute power: ground, 3.3v, 5v, 12v and possibly 3.3v standby (or else a second 12v rail). each rail has a cross section of 20 mm2 (10 x 2 mm) which should be more than sufficient, as aluminium is a very good conductor.

hanging out
this is the first blade i assembled this evening after getting the missing brass distance washers from the hardware store. it's hanging off two strong neodymium magnets from the overhead steel plate. (well, i had to take the photo upside down, actually .... but the magnets work fine.)
